Harry was first to react. As fast as a Wild West gunslinger, he drew his weapon. Someone close to us shouted “He’s got a gun!” and pandemonium erupted faster than a Black Friday sale. Thousands of people ducking, screaming, and running for cover as the sound of gunfire continued to drill through the night air.

Instinctively, I looked at the stage, sucking myself into a narrower profile as, all around me, the throng turned into an ‘every man for himself ’ stampede.

Shauna was gone.

My chest flushed with adrenaline.

“On it!” Harry shouted as he saw my concern. “I’ll find Shauna. The shooter’s all yours.” Then, with his gun held high, he half-dodged, half-barged his way toward the stage.

Another rapid burst of gunshots broke out, a sharp smell of cordite on the ocean breeze.

In the growing darkness, and with hundreds of people fleeing the scene, it was impossible to see where the gunfire was coming from.

I shook out my phone. “Jan, talk to me.”

“I don’t have eyes on a shooter,” she said in my ear. Her voice was tense, raised. “But I did see what looked like muzzle flashes on the pier side of the crowd.”

I turned my gaze toward the pier, and the news crews stationed over that way. All but one of them were filming the unfolding bedlam. However, the Channel 5 News camera was aimed at the ocean, and I could see Chelsea Meadows pointing at something moving in the distance. I strained my eyes and glimpsed the shape of someone sprinting away across the sand.

“Suspect is headed for the pier,” I shouted into the phone, then I stowed it in my pocket and gave chase.
